Preventing Patents?

It occurs to me that I have a good idea, but I really doubt my ability to successfully extract the almightly dollar from it, so I want to prevent others from patenting it?

What is the best way to release an invention to the public domain, to make sure others CAN'T patent it?

The best way to prevent something from being patented is to actually file for patent, but then do not patent the idea. Under laws of some contries this is consider a legal disclosure to the public, but no patent has been sought. Thus after a set time, for Canada it is 2 years the idea becomes completely unpatentable.
